GreedFall Review (PS4): An Engaging Adventure in a Unique Setting

Republished on Wednesday 30th December, 2020: We're bringing this review back from the archives following the announcement of January 2021's PS Plus lineup. The original text follows.

GreedFall Review (PS4)

I think we have our expectations too high for this game. It's a smaller team but improvements have definitely been made since their last 2 games. Getting mixed reviews but I'm hearing the quests and story are top notch. Glad I preordered. I want to support a smaller studio. I also saw that it was #1 on steam, but I can't verify that. I'm hoping it does well.

@Nyne11Tyme Nah, I don't think GreedFall has any glaring problems, which does make it a bit difficult to review. A lot of the stuff it does isn't amazing, but it certainly isn't bad either. Much of what makes up the game is above average.

Great review, but it looks like the writer spent a lot of time having to defend or excuse the game's flaws. All in all it looks like a very average game, which is understandably the toughest kind to review because one wrongly worded paragraph could easily scare off potential buyers or give the wrong impression. I think this would go well with Divinity 2 and Outerworlds when I decide to scoop up some PS4 RPGs.

GreedFall received "mixed or average reviews" on review aggregator Metacritic for the PC and PlayStation 4 versions based on 38 and 37 reviews respectively, while the Xbox One version received "generally favorable reviews" based on 14 reviews.[7][8][9]

The main thing that helps GreedFall stand out in a crowded genre is its setting and story. As mentioned at the top of this review, it's inspired by the Colonial period and the age of piracy. That doesn't mean you're sailing to Bermuda, however.

Sony has just recently announced its roster of free Playstation Plus games for January 2021. Included in the set is "Maneater" which is exclusive for PS5, and two available games for PS4 and PS5 which are "Shadow of the Tomb Raider" and the RPG that will be under review- the "Greedfall".

"Greedfall" has a generally good review from many. In fact, they've been nominated with numerous awards such as Best RPG 2019, Best Artistic Design, Best Message-Bearer Game, and many more. However, a first-hand experience of the game might show you Spiders might be too promising.

Greedfall shines when it's presenting you with problems to solve that have multiple solutions and when dialogue options are forcing you to make difficult decisions that will have consequences. I found myself falling deeper and deeper into long involved side quests despite my best efforts to blast through the game and get this review out as soon as possible because I was just having too much fun learning about life in Teer Fradee. If you long for the days of Bioware's rich worlds filled with interesting characters and choices, you'll have fun exploring the world of Greedfall. It was never going to be as good or as important as The Witcher, but it scratches that itch. It's The Witcher Boy, and if you ask me, that's worth your time.
